About CLAWS ...

CLAWS is an all volunteer, non-profit 501c3 organization operating in Grand Junction. We maintain a shelter at 2214 Sanford Drive that houses approximately 100 animals. Adoptions are done at the shelter during regular business hours or by appointment. We are also usually at PetSmart across from the Mall on weekends and have a variety of cats and kittens available for adoption.

The Importance of Spay/Neuter ...

Unfortunately, there are just too many cats. In the United States it is estimated that there are 60 million house cats and also a feral population of approximately 60 million. Research shows that any unsterilized house cat will contribute to the feral population within its first 2 years of life. The only real solution to overpopulation is spay/neuter. Every responsible cat owner should make sterilization a priority to assure that their pet does not contribute to the tragedy and suffering of cats in feral collonies.

Adoption is the best option ...

All CLAWS cats are spay/neutered before adoption. Even our youngest kittens are fixed by licensed veterenarians before they are offered to the public. This, along with a full set of vaccinations and testing for FIV and FeLV make CLAWS kitties preferable to kittens or cats offered for free in local newspapers or online.

Are FREE cats really FREE?

NO! Any responsible cat owner will find that to spay/neuter, vaccinate, and get a health check by a vet will cost them far more than the adoption fee charged by CLAWS.

Where do CLAWS cats come from?

CLAWS does its best to help all cats in need in the Grand Valley. Many cats are rescued from agencies such as Mesa County Animal Services that may become overcrowded. Some cats are surrendered by people who may have to move or who have lost their homes. Litters of kittens are brought to us by owners who have not spay/neutered their own cats. And some are simply found, frightened, hungry and in need. They are brought to us as their last chance at finding a loving home.

Gifts from the Angels

CLAWS is proud to acknowledge the memories of these eight wonderful people. With the donations given from these families, the memories of each loved one will live on, while providing CLAWS with our financial base to begin our mission.

John L. "Jack" Crawford (1913-1999) was a life long Coloradan and rancher in Routt county. Jack had a love of the land and his livestock. He also enjoyed the wildlife on his ranch, especially the elk, whistle pigs, and his feral cats. Memorial donation given by Cynthia J. Crawford.

Earl C. Jones (1909-1988) and Ella Mae Jones (1921-2006) ran a sawmill together and sawmill camps throughout Routt county from 1939 until 1956. They have three sons, Larry, Darold, and Keith. A few months after Earl passed away, Ella Mae got a small black and white kitten for companionship - Kitten Kat. Until her death, 10/17/2006, Kitten Kat was her constant companion. Memorial donation given by Keith J. Jones.

Walter G. Seabold (1915-1971) beloved husband and father, was taken from us too soon. Born and raised in the midwest, he loved vacationing in the mountain west, especially Colorado. He enjoyed the outdoors, camping, and hiking with his family. A mechanical engineer by profession, he had a talent for designing and building things around the house as well. Memorial donation given by Todd J. Seabold.

Cass Weberskirch (Weber) (1911-1993) was a general heavy equipment contractor, building bridges, roads, and ditches in Routt county. Later, he bought and ran Bear River Sand and Gravel, west of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Cass always enjoyed the company of his pets. Memorial donation given by Pearl Weberskirch.

Deborah M. G. Hause-Bates (1967-2000) was one of five children and the only girl. She was only 32 when she died. She left behind four children of her own, Todd, Jeffery, Bradley and Lexie. Her children were her entire life. Her headstone says it all, "Don't cry for me, because I'm holding the babies." Memorial donation given by Judith H. Mazrin.

Albert "Sonny" Cole - passed away Feb. 27, 2002

Carol Gene Cole - passed away Oct. 18,2006

Dearly missed, may memories last forever. Memorial donation given by Greg and Rhonda Cole.
